You might know that you measure how effective insulation is at keeping your home’s temperature by its R-value. What you might not know, however, is that a wall might have a different R-value than the insulation that is installed in it. This is due to different parts of the wall having less effective insulation for one cause or another. It could be that there is a crack or hole in the wall that lets the outside air through. It could also be that the insulation has been compressed, making it less effective.
The effect could be that you have a wall that you think is adequately insulated when in fact it isn’t.
The easiest way to ascertain what area of the wall might require your attention, is by obtaining an infrared reading. It can pinpoint where there are areas that have lower or higher temperature than expected, and then these can be remedied.
